SYNOPSIS

Highly acclaimed as ¡®the most beautiful film made in Paris,¡¯ this film first brought international fame to Agnès Varda. The film depicts Cleo¡¯s struggles; she suspects that she may have cancer and battles to overcome her fear of death. During the process, the happiness of being alive, lethargy brought by death and the frailty of the human body are delicately expressed, while certain passages of time between life and death create peculiar rhythmic values.
Agnès Varda makes the most use out of distinctive photographic and cinematic qualities instead of the conventional storytelling process. Beauty and ugliness encounter one another; the grotesque(a man eating a live frog) and the attractive(Cleo¡¯s public image) are juxtaposed; light and dark, artificial and natural things create striking visual contrast; and light-hearted musical comedy is intertwined with tragedy... Cleo from 5 to 7 overall constructs a subtle texture through this use of the state of confrontations. (Joo You-Shin)
