SYNOPSIS

Amangol is a poor young woman. To help her find a well-paying job while protecting her virtue, her father shaves Amangol¡¯s head and disguises her as a man. Amangol changes her name, puts on men¡¯s clothing and finds employment at a carpet factory where most of the workers are women. Her status as a man allows her to get a better-paying job than the others and to send the much-needed money to her family. Amangol must remain cautious and secretive. Her precarious situation cannot tolerate even the slightest indiscretion. She works hard, but isn¡¯s spared rebuke and humiliation by her supervisor. Complicating matters for Amangol, however, is the attention she is getting from another young woman worker. Perhaps charmed by Amangol¡¯s gentle demeanour, Belgheis has developed a crush on the ¡°Young man?¡± ¡¦ (production notes)

    Born in Tehran, Iran in 1966, Shahriar studied cinema at the California State University. After finishing college, she ended up living in Rome where she worked as assistant director and film editor within the Italian film industry. Daughters of the Sun is her first feature film.
