SYNOPSIS

Girls Like Us is a documentary filmed in South Philadelphia. Its subject is girls from the ages of 14 to 18: Anna, a first generation Vietnamese-American; Lisa, a model student who lives together with her divorced mother; Deyona, an African-American who would like to study music; and Raelene who became a single mother at the age of fourteen and left school.
By following each girl in diverse circumstances of culture, ethnicity, class and family, the film explores the common steps that teenage girls pass through, and the ways that social and personal differences manifest in their lives. The film presents a vibrant portrait of the girls¡¯ hopes, frustrations, sexual experiences, conflicts and reconciliations with their families. The documentary of the girls¡¯ growth is filled out with interviews with their friends, mothers and grandmothers. Encountering and resonating against each other, their stories question the multiple meanings of ¡®becoming woman¡¯ in a patriarchal society. (Kwon Eun-sun)
