Anna has just graduated from theological school and has been married to Frank for several years yet is without a child. One day, she receives a temporary substitute job offer as prison priest at a women’s penitentiary. There she meets the mystic Kate who has just been relocated, and was known for her supernatural healing powers. Although Kate keeps silent about her talent, the rumors, started by her fellow inmate Marion, spread like wildfire. Anna attempts spiritual communication with Kate, who not only turns a cold shoulder to her but becomes romantically involved in a forbidden relationship with prison guard, Henrik. In addition, Anna is thrilled to discover that she is pregnant, but is also distressed by the doctor’s diagnosis that the child stands a great chance of being born deformed. Which fate will Anna choose? Will she entrust her faith in the lord and give birth to her child; will she ask for Kate’s help; or will she listen to her doctor and forfeit the life of her child?

Here the opposite of faith is not suspicion or disbelief but human knowledge as proof of faith. The renowned Danish actors who chose to work on this film with only a single synopsis give their most profound performances to project the dark, serious and tragic aspects of life.
