As a follow-up to her debut film, A Question of Silence, Marleen Gorris presents a feature-length thriller as her second project. The film begins with the residents of the Happy House Sex Club cleaning up remnants of the previous night’s activities and preparing for a new morning. There, women with their own painful pasts sell sex for survival. Diane has just joined Happy House to earn the living for her useless drug addict husband cannot. Meanwhile, in a different city, a well-dressed man in a suit kidnaps a woman, ties her up, and photographs her with a polaroid camera. The woman cries out when she sees the photographs of murdered women on one wall. Her pain makes the serial killer ecstatic. When the two seemingly unrelated stories converge unexpectedly, the director’s extraordinary talents shine. Broken Mirrors is a strong warning to men who take women’s pain for granted when pursuing their own pleasure. (LIM Sung-min)
