SYNOPSIS

Sunny Bergman¡¯s Over the Hill is a documentary about women¡¯s agony over dissatisfaction at their appearance and the solution for the problem, plastic surgery. Men whistle when an attractive woman passes by, but this usually stops happening when the woman passes thirty. And women in their thirties realize that they are now on the journey to growing old. Wrinkles appear in the eye area and neck seemingly overnight, and the body experiences drastic changes in its shape. Today, being beautiful and being a woman expected to go hand in hand. Images of gorgeous women from magazines, ads and other visual media have a strong effect on women¡¯s self-evaluation. However, these images are far from reality. Those retouched images just show imaginary construction of the absolute female beauty by people in the business of advertising. Based on the canonical expression, ¡®the personal is political¡¯ and positioning her own face and body at the center of matter, Bergman investigates plastic surgery¡¯s claim as the most desired technology that can solve women¡¯s problems and bring democratic access to beauty to all women, and she presents women¡¯s own voices on the matter. (KIM Eun-shil)
