SYNOPSIS

Ladakh is an isolated village in the Himalayas which became famous through ecologist Helena Norberg Hodge¡¯s environmentist book, ¡ºOld Future¡». The village belongs to India but is governed by Tibet¡¯s Buddhist culture, a self-sufficient country that harmonizes with Mother Nature. Though introduced to the western world as an idyllic place, even in Ladakh, women have to be assertive about their basic rights, to accomplish what they desire. Dolkar is a young and brave woman who decides to form an ice hockey team in this village in the mountains. She finds a woman coach from among some American travelers, who used to be an ice hockey player. To find enough players for the team, she goes to a neighboring Muslim town. After many complications, her ice hockey team has its first game. Yet the men who run the game treat her team unfairly and so Dolkar has to rally her team against another set of obstacles. Thin Ice, directed by former ice hockey coach, Håkan Berthas, focuses on a girl who searches for life¡¯s values and accomplishment through the sport of ice hockey. There are preconceptions and strong prejudices against women in Ladakh and even among other women who try to stop them. (KIM Sunah)
