In 1982, the Chinese Communist Party officially confirmed restricting births as a basic policy. In a society where men are favored, implementing a ‘one child per family’ policy with no change in traditional ways of thinking was a terrible ordeal. Countless numbers of baby girls whose names were erased met untimely deaths and roamed around the land, water, and skies of China. The film lifts the curtain of beautiful images to reveal the dark reality lurking behind China’s modernization. When you imagine that Yo’s words, “My mother and father are trying to kill me” are not just simply a line in a movie, chills run down your spine and your blood boils. (Jay SOHN)
