SYNOPSIS

Butch Jamie, who dreams of being an actor, continually faces rejection in auditions, for there is no role for her in an industry which wants typically ¡®pretty¡¯ girls. One day an independent film company proposes that Jamie play a male role and pretend to be a man in the real life. Jamie, longing to be an actor, accepts the wild proposition and joins the film shooting. Jamie, however, happens to fall in love with a straight woman, Jill, on set. Genuine communication is difficult for Jamie who is neither a feminine woman nor a biological male and her image gets increasingly distorted. She has to wear a skirt and a long-haired wig or, conversely, pretend to be a male in order to be accepted in society. The director satirizes homophobia in our society where gender
stereotypes prevail by presenting Jamie¡¯s absurd experiences. Michelle Ehlen, not only the director but the leading actor, has continuously made films on the issue of her own butch identity. Butch Jamie is her feature film debut and won an award for Best Actress at the 2007 Outfest and the Long Island LGBT Film Festival. (Jay SOHN)
