SYNOPSIS

 Synopsis
Miao Miao is a shy exchange student from Japan. Struggling to adjust to her new life in Taipei, she finally opens up after one of her female classmates Ai, an extroverted and charming girl, who becomes increasingly enamoured with her new friend. Unaware of Ai¡¯s confused feelings for her, Miao Miao falls for the brooding CD shop owner Chen Fei; a young guy with a secret past who seems determined to block out everything and everyone with a pair of headphones playing nothing.

 Program Note
A shy Japanese student, Miao Miao, arrives in Taiwan as an exchange student. To her, everything is strange; then her classmate Ai approaches her. Ai is a girl with a French mother and a Taiwanese father, but she does not get along with her father. Separation from family and identities different from other students bind the two girls together. They cook, roam around the city, ride bikes, buy odd goods and become friends. Ai gradually feels a subtle love towards Miao, but Miao¡¯s eyes turn to Chen Fei, the curt record-shop owner who seems to hide behind a mask and reject communication with others. The film describes two teenage girls who face the feeling of love that comes suddenly and subtly like a dream. How nice would it be if love would give us a warning before it appears, just like the pre-announcement of the starting pitchers in a baseball game! But love always comes rushing in, without announcement or preparation. Sometimes one makes bets, plans, one stages coincidences all to realize love; sometimes one realizes the feeling of love only after losing it. Miao¡¯s love is the former, whereas Ai¡¯s is the latter. In a serene and pleasantly sentimental way, Miao Miao describes the delicate and brilliant moment we call first love. (KWON Eun-sun)
