 Program Note
The Cherry Orchard - Blossoming is based on a hit comic book series by Yoshida Akimi, whose ¡°Banana Fish¡± and ¡°Yacha¡± is loved by many devoted fans in Korea. Nakahara Shun, who made The Cherry Orchard - Blossoming a hit when he produced it in 1991, remade it in 2008. Momo Yuki, who majored in cello, quits music and transfers to the famous girls¡¯ school – a school which stands upon a hill that bursts with cherry blossoms every spring. The school is so strict and oppressive that students turn back to the school building and bow before leaving for home. However, the school is also a romantic place for giddy girls that steal a look at their athletic classmates and squeal out ¡°so cool!¡± In a secret place of this school, Momo Yuki finds a dust-covered play script - Anton Chekhov¡¯s ¡°The Cherry Orchard¡± The school had a tradition of staging that every spring when cherry blossoms came into bloom – though it has been banned for eleven years now. What sort of secret lies behind the banning of ¡°The Cherry Orchard¡±? The restriction awakens an underlying desire, and upon discovering the dust-covered script wrapped in an aura of secrecy, there immediately arises within Momo a fervent desire to stage the play. Will she and her friends be able to stage the play successfully? The Cherry Orchard - Blossoming expresses in its delightful and wistful way the sort of experiences that teenage girls have: secrets, daydreams, sexual curiosity that grows but remains still too vague, an obscure resistance against adults, and the joy and relief of achieving something as a member of a group. Although the film is set in current times, the girls¡¯ school that is the setting has all specificities erased. (KWON Eun-sun)
