 Synopsis
Rosa van Dijk is a sensitive thirteen-year-old girl with a vivid imagination. She has a talent for drawing, likes to chat a lot with her friends on MSN and had a good sense of humor. Despite all this, Rosa, like most thirteen-year-old girls, is insecure and doesn’t like the way she looks. Since her parents’ divorce, Rosa has lived with her mother in Den Bosch, a city in the south of the Netherlands. After Rosa’s baby brother Abeltje is born, her mother decides to move in with her new boyfriend Alexander, Abeltje’s father, who lives in Groningen, in the northern part of the country. Rosa loves her little stepbrother Abeltje to bits but does not particularly like her stepfather, who she secretly calls Alexander the Great Ape.

 Program Note
A Dutch girl Rosa\'s divorced mom decides to move from Den Bosch to Groningen to live with her boyfriend. Rosa now has to live in a strange city and attend an unfamiliar school. Most of all, she has to live with her mom\'s boyfriend who is, Rosa calls, a Great Ape. And making matters worse, the thirteen year old girl is getting more anxious as she watches her already dissatisfying body gain weight. How will Rosa be able to survive all these? Fortunately Rosa has a friend, Esther. She is also able to talk to her cyber-boyfriend Jonah via the computer. In addition, imaginative Rosa has invented for herself an alter-ego: the red-haired Rooz, whom she can ask for advice. It’s barely possible to adapt to life at her new school. Rosa becomes infatuated with her art teacher who recognizes her talent in art. The teacher introduces Rosa to graffiti. While Rosa starts expressing herself through graffiti, she meets a boy named Nuez who also does graffiti. Meeting new people in new places, Rosa tries different things to build a new self. The age of thirteen is a time for re-discovering your relationship with the world. The most brilliant moments of this film are the cartoon-like fantasy scenes in which Rosa gains the strength to survive whenever she is alone. These fantasy scenes vividly show Rosa’s inner thoughts and feelings as they rise up in her. These fantasies give Rosa natural tonic shots which invigorate her even though she seems to be stuck with a dark life. The scenes act as manuals for living, helping her adjust herself to her new life. (SIM Hye-kyong)
