SYNOPSIS


 Synopsis 

Duah Fares, a young woman from the Druze village of Sagur in the Galilee, was one of the 12 finalists in the beauty pageant for Israeli-Arab women - ¡®Lady Kul el-Arab.¡¯ While preparing for the pageant, a special relationship develops between Duah and fashion designer Jack Yaakob. Together they go to Tel Aviv to register Duah for the general Israeli beauty contest as well. Duah breezes through the preliminary selections for the contest and changes her name to Angelina.

Lady Kul El Arab looks after a young woman Duah Fares who challenges a beauty pageant ¡®Miss Israel¡¯ for the first time as a Druze woman. She hopes to succeed as a famous fashion model, calls her father every time she gets on a fashion show or takes a picture for publishing. It is because, for example, she has to ask ¡°whether she¡¯s allowed to wear sleeveless shirt?¡± It¡¯s her father who decides whether it is on or against the custom rules in a community of Muslim paternalism. The slightly keeping balance between traditional rules and fashion industry, and until she became one of participants of Arabian beauty pageant, breaks in a moment when she challenges ¡®Miss Israel¡¯. Fares assures that the national beauty pageant would be the big step for her career while the swim suit judge is against the rule of ¡°A woman should not expose her body to the public.¡± She experiences the murder threat from the community people and sees the family collapsed. The documentary Lady Kul El Arab quietly sees the reality of young Arabian woman standing while both surrounded by brilliant shopping mall and medium that praises consumption, and also bound with layers of traditional custom. At the same time, it is about a brave girl who makes a decision in front of the numerous walls and acts to have a common appeal. (KWON Eun-sun)
