SYNOPSIS

 Synopsis
Dunya is Moroccan, raised with Ramadan, Imams and Mecca. Desie is as Dutch as Cheese, Wooden Shoes and Tulips. On her 18th birthday, Dunya learns that her family wants her to get married to some nephew from Morocco. She doesn\'t really feel like doing so. At the same time Desie gets pregnant what makes her want to meet her own biological father. When she finds out he lives in Morocco, she follows Dunya to Morocco to find him.

 Program Note
One of the common subject of the New Currents of the IWFFIS is ¡®female-buddy road movie¡¯, in which two female friends who are totally different in character but remains in close relationship takes a trip together. This year¡¯s Dunya & Desie is Dutch version of Thelma & Louise. Wild, playful and sexually open Desie and relatively conservative, careful Moroccan immigrant Dunya are close friends who were grown up in the same village. Dunya¡¯s parents who cling to the Muslim¡¯s tradition and culture don¡¯t like her hanging out with Desie who likes going to the clubs, and try to make her marry to one of their relatives in Morocco. In the meantime, Desie broke up with her boyfriend while getting unwilled pregnancy to have a chance to remind her biological father who also did not wanted her to have. The two friends started going to Morocco apart. But Dunya finally escaped from her family and join Desie¡¯s journey. In a movie about different people in ethnicity, religion and culture, it is a cultural difference or conflict that becomes the center of both dramatic troubles and solutions. Likewise, this movie lies the conflict between the concept of religion, moral and value of the two-Dutch and Moroccan Muslim-families to the center of narrative. And female friendship, marriage, pregnancy before marriage, family conflicts are added as the typical road movies¡¯ stories such as an escape from normal life, facing to unfamiliar environment, realization on the road put between. Dunya & Desie is a heart moving road movie as a picture of two friends¡¯ adventure for living the next level of life. (KWON Eun-sun)
