SYNOPSIS

Melbourne Queer Film Festival 2009
Audience Award \'Best Picture\' / Queer Film Festival, Bremen 2008

 Synopsis
When Mel (22) is mistaken for a Portuguese male by 14 year-old hitchhiker Jenny, she grabs the opportunity to escape her dreary life and reinvents herself. Her new Portuguese co-worker Nuno serves as her identity role model. Jenny and Mel fall madly in love, but it is only a matter of time until her lie will be discovered...

Program Note
This beautiful and touching film could be considered as the German version of the US film Boys Don¡¯t Cry. 22-old-year Mel gets confused when her brother, who is very close to her, gets engaged all of a sudden. Confused Mel pays Nuno, a new colleague from Portugal, to pretend to be her boyfriend. One day, Mel happens to come across Jenny, a pretty 14-year-old girl when she tries to hitchhike. Seeing Mel in her loose T shirt and short hair, Jenny mistakes her for a boy. Mel feels comfortable with her new identity and chooses to introduce herself as Miguel from Faro, Portugal, instead of denying it. Jenny and Mel fall in love with each other passionately but the lies do not last forever. This film is a portrait of Mel and Jenny who do not know their identities or what steps they have to take yet as they grow up. Jenny looks strong but is dependent on her boyfriend and mother. Mel is androgynous and has to fake herself to cope with her sexual identity since society forces her to choose one or the other. She, therefore, plays woman to her family and plays man to Jenny. But this isn¡¯t just a performance to her: it could be her real identity. It is society that forces a choice and puts her into a complicated situation where she could live only with lies. Through the love with Jenny, Mel realizes that Miguel is created by her own will, not by coincidence or lies, and she really wants to be him. She leaves for Faro after all as if she wants to prove herself. (CHO Hye-young)
