 Synopsis

Ga-young lives in an old deteriorating shack but dreams of living in a new luxurious house someday. One day, she encounters the spirits of houses in her neighborhood, which is scheduled to be torn down as part of the Urban Renewal Program. A feature animation that uses the format of a folklore narrative-like imagination to tell the story of a generation with an income of 880 thousand won($800) and the ruthlessness of development projects against the backdrop of a site marked for demolition.

 Program Note

Ka-young, wasted her entire fortune by investing in stock market funds, decided to live off her friend Hee-joo in the squalid rooftop house for a while. However Ka-young, dreaming of living in a fancy apartment like anyone else, is full of complaints although she is dependent on Hee-joo. Then one day by chance, Ka-young picks up a bracelet which a stray cat dropped off. After that incident, she starts to see spirits of houses. Driven by the promise of a winning lotto ticket by the spirit of a house, she starts to get caught in their affairs.
A philosopher defines 21st century South Korea as “the age of exile and escape.” This society believes a higher building, a house with higher value (price), and visible glamour and grandeur determine the quality of a space. In this circumstance, thousands of commoner who lived in their houses with emotional attachments have been expelled from their lands out of the way because of re/development. Expelled people start to rise in revolt by deviating away from the traditional ways of development. It has now become the most important topic, understanding and coping with exile from people’s home. The animation The House shows the sentiment of placelessness that people who are expelled hold through the attractive characters, the spirits of a house. And the imagination of ‘escape after exile‘ is left to our imagination. (Jay SHON)
