Synopsis

10 years have been spent accomplishing the seemingly impossible mission of ‘mom’. My Sweet Baby is the childcare diary of the director herself who confesses with embarrassment that there are moms like her in the world and is also message of encouragement for all those who live in Korea as a ‘mom’.

Program Note

A documentary director needs to be a lightest being in the world. As many other people have lived their lives, she married based on ungrounded happiness and somehow became a mother. Her children always want her around but she needs to go back and focus on her next project. The family criticizes her for her selfishness while she blames herself for her lack of maternal instincts. This film is a record of an autobiography of the director herself and her children for roughly around ten years starting from her firstborn child in 2001 until present days. Her previous film Life Gose on showed sympathy and comfort by portraying the complicated mother and daughter relationship through her family history and shared a meaning of a mother as an independent woman. My Sweet Baby allows self-examination and investigation of the meanings of being a mother through children’s perspective by looking inside of ordinary life of a family.
A perfect mother with Maternal Instinct, which requires unconditional self-sacrifice for her children, is an idea that surely makes the mother timid especially when one cannot even expect a decent aid from the Korean childcare system. The film shows that mother is a ‘becoming’ and growing individual throughout raising her three children against the ultimate myth of a perfect mother figure. The visual images of the mother in this film is that she will not put down her camera but instead she will share her experience and knowledge by breathing with her kids and be concerned for them as she cares for her crying children and embraces them with warmth. The film will share and give you the hope and comfort for those who are afraid of becoming a mother in the future or for mothers who feels lost in between overwhelming childcare. (JU So-yeon)
