SYNOPSIS

 Synopsis

The opening film is the latest film by Doris DÖRRIE who visited the International Women¡¯s Film Festival in Seoul with TheFisherman and His Wife. Kathi, a single mom who has to rely on a specially designed tool just to get out of bed due to of her huge body size, has the finest touch when it comes to cutting hair. The problem is her ¡°unusual¡± appearance prevents her from getting a job in a trendy hair salon. Eventually, Kathi strives through ups and downs in an attempt to open her own beauty shop. This film is an excellent example of how Doris DÖRRIE creates variations of the trivial things that happen around us daily rather than a grand discourse and convinces the audience to nod in agreement. Her talents as a great storyteller are as strong as ever. Her humorous narrative is laced with points to ponder over, ranging from Germany¡¯s poverty following its reunification, financial capital, policies concerning migrants, prejudice against women¡¯s appearances and sexuality, and the issue of single moms. Kathi the protagonist is the next in line of eccentric and endearing female characters that live in the films of Doris DÖRRIE starting from Nobody Loves Me.
