 Synopsis
“She drove me into a corner, then forced me to go beyond my limits. She made me confront the absolute: love, sacrifice, tenderness, abandonment. She dislocated me, transformed me. Why didn’t anyone warn me? Why doesn’t anyone ever talk about this?”

 Program Note
A Happy Event develops a series of happenings, in woman’s point of view, that involves a young couple who gives up the ideal and faces their limitations due to the pregnancy and infant care that they only vaguely thought of. Babara is taking a doctoral course in Philosophy. One day, she passionately falls in love with Nicholas, a DVD rental shop clerk. When she starts to write her dissertation in earnest, she realizes that she is pregnant. Once she decides that she will have this baby, unexpected changes visit her body and her daily life. For the matter of child caring, a young couple doesn’t know what is right or wrong, or whose fault is bigger. They just face confusion, helplessness, and desperate concerns for the future and the film presents these in a unique style of French comedy. The film shows a woman who previously thought herself as a smart and reasonable person gradually loses her control and falls in despair, but it does not force her to fix her state of mind. Instead, the film chooses to protect this woman exhausted from child caring and saves a real ending for the audience who can imagine what choices and compromises Babara may make once she recovers her confidence. A star TV presenter and actress, Louise BOURGOIN’s acting is indeed impressive. (HWANG Miyojo)
