SYNOPSIS

 Synopsis
A taxi driver, Ji-hi, saves a girl who has almost killed herself by taking poison after being raped by gangsters. Ji-hi also saves Mi-yeon who wonders on the street after being deserted by her lover. On a so-and-so manner, 8 girls from all over the country gather at a small inn and agree to help each other when they face troubles.

 Program Note
Girls from Eight Provinces is related to ¡®Gallant Man¡¯ series, which was a box office hit in 1969. It is because this film is a story about 8 girls including Jihee, fiancé of Yongpal, who dominated the 8 provinces with his fist and who splendidly commanded the dialect of Jeolla province. Jihee, as brave and spirited as Yongpal, drives a taxi around Seoul and meets Insook, who became a bar girl after being raped, and Mira, who almost died after being betrayed by a lover. Living in a motel, they united and formed a new female community. Like this, the girls from eight provinces banded together, and found men who oppressed women throughout Seoul, and suppressed them with quick fists and fierce kicks. The film portrays these girls from eight provinces as the weak gender in accordance with the way women were considered during that period, but on the other hand, it attempts to overturn this portrayal through female action fantasy of taking a stand against male violence after banding together to form a community. Also, it is delightful to see the appearance of Yongpal, a romantic who briskly knocked down the hoodlums of Seoul in his search for Jihee. In the end, the element of imagination that hops back and forth between the reality and the fantasy in Girls from Eight Provinces degenerates to an action film consisting of physical fight, but the barehanded action of the girls and the comical script are enough for the film to shine.
