SYNOPSIS

 Synopsis
Marta KOWALSKA, flees from Belarus to Sweden together with her 10-year-old daughter, Anna. The two of them end up in a refugee centre in northern Sweden where they meet Ali, an Algerian. Much to Marta¡¯s distress, Ali tries to befriend Anna. When this fear subsides, love begins to grow between Marta and Ali.

 Program Note
For Marta, a young mother in her twenties raising a young daughter, life in Belarus is a continuation of tension like walking on thin ice. When her daughter comes under the threat of child trafficking, they cross the border and escape to Sweden. However, Sweden¡¯s refugee camp that she tried so desperately to reach is not a peaceful haven that she had imagined. Her misfortune becomes the subject of Swedish government official¡¯s objective evaluation, and the refugees, each with his own trauma, remain guarded and threaten each other. The threat of sexual abuse in this place filled with dizzying tension does not permit peace even in the short time that she takes to wash herself.
Ali, whom she met in the refugee camp, seemed like a part of the threat at first but over time quietly enters the lives of the mother and the daughter. Marta¡¯s daughter was her everything, but as a new window opens up, she dreams of a future with Ali. However, the reality is too barren for foreigners to wish for a hopeful future. Marta is gradually driven to the corner and a cruel moment of decision nears.
The film illuminates from a distance the reality that refugees face, a continuously repeating subject in Europe, through a single mom, Marta. Magdalena POPTAWSKA, who played the role of Marta, outstandingly expressed the female sexuality, which is a mark of hope as well as something that could easily be abused, through rapidly changing emotions and sensuous nude performance. (LEE Hyo-jeong)
