SYNOPSIS

Synopsis
For Grandmother tells the story of Hannah, a 28-year old Tsinoy, as she deals with the recent passing of her businessman father William Huang in a car accident. During Huang¡¯s wake, a surprising revelation unfolds as Hannah discovers and meets her half-brother for the first time. As Hannah faces the challenge of dealing with acceptance and forgiveness on the last day of the wake, she experiences a rollercoaster of emotions.


 

Program Note
This film shows 23 minutes and 40 seconds at a man¡¯s funeral in the Philippines. Hannah, a Tsinoy(Chinese Filipinos or Filipino Chinese) girl, has just lost her father. Only then does Hanna¡¯s mother tell her that she has a half-brother, who is now on his way from China. Peter, an old friend of her father¡¯s, advises Hannah that in order to succeed in business one must learn to speak Chinese, and that family businesses should be handed down to sons, adding that in order for a family to enjoy good luck, the first-born child should be a son. Using the onescene- one-cut method, the camera follows Hannah and portrays the history between the Chinese and the Filipinos as present in the Philippines today, the Confucian patriarchy, and gender-specific roles.     Relyn is half-Filipino and half-Chinese. She has been exposed to Chinese traditions ever since she was young yet she does not speak Mandarin. Relyn graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Film at the University of the Philippines. Her undergraduate short film thesis, For Grandmother garnered an honorable mention for narrative film.
