SYNOPSIS

Synopsis
Claudia, a lonely young woman, works in a supermarket. One night, she ends up in the hospital with a severe case of appendicitis. There, she meets Martha, the woman resting in the bed next to hers. When she gets out of the hospital, she spontaneously offers Claudia to go home with them. Getting to know this family makes Claudia feel at ease. And for the first time she experiences a sense of belonging in this peculiar little tribe.


 

Program Note
Imagine yourself living alone in the city working as a supermarket clerk and one day you are awakened by severe pain. Imagine
 how overwhelmingly sad it would be to go to a hospital by yourself. Similarly, Claudia entered the hospital to get her appendix
 out. One day, Claudia wakes up in the night and finds Martha next to her enduring pain and not letting her children know. When
 Claudia leaves the hospital, Martha also leaves and asks Claudia to have a dinner together at her house. Martha¡¯s biggest daughter
 is struggling to take care of her younger sisters and a brother. Her second daughter causing concern because of her overweight
 and the third is stuck in adolescence. The youngest son is sweet but always gets into trouble. Martha, mother, is getting sicker and
 sicker. Many family members get themselves into troubles and quarrels, hurting each other. Yet, Claudia draws closer to this family
 little by little.

 In her debut film, Claudia SAINTE-LUCE, the director, portrays the ordinary life of a single-parent family by showing the house of a
 single woman, streets and supermarket. However, the warm interactions among people and the support from the society are much
 more enticing and invigorating than any other attractions and historic sites in Mexico. [LEE Angela]

    Born in Veracruz, Mexico in 1982. Claudia SAINTE-LUCE graduated from the University of Guadalajara in Visual Arts in 2004. Since 2007, she has been working as assistant director for several Mexican feature films. Her first feature film, The Amazing Catfish, selected in the competitive section Cineasti del presente at the Locarno Film Festival 2013 and at the Toronto Film Festival 2013 in the Discovery section. She was a writer for the short film Australia (2016). Her latest work is her role as writer and director for the film La Caja Vacía (2017).
