SYNOPSIS

2014 DOC NYC Film Festival / 2014 Boston Film Festival, Audience Award, Best Doc

 Synopsis

She¡¯s Beautiful When She¡¯s Angry resurrects the buried history of the outrageous, often brilliant women who founded the modern women¡¯s movement from 1966 to 1971. She¡¯s Beautiful When She¡¯s Angry takes us from the founding of NOW, with ladies in hats and gloves, to the emergence of more radical factions of women¡¯s liberation; from intellectuals like Kate MILLETT to the street theatrics of Witch (Women¡¯s International Conspiracy from Hell!). It does not shy away from controversies over race, sexual preference and leadership that arose in the women¡¯s movement, and brilliantly captures the spirit of the time - thrilling, scandalous, and often hilarious.

Program Note

\"Women take actions when they are angry and think something is wrong.\" She\'s Beautiful When She\'s Angry is a powerful documentary that addresses the second-wave feminism from 1966 to 1971. Second-wave feminism was a period in which all kind of feminine issues arose at once. The film focuses on women\'s reproductive rights—the issue of women in charge of their own bodies. This develops into an array of discussions on ethics in the human body, such as \"what is righteous reproduction in women\'s rights?\" These controversial discussions are still ongoing. Secondwave feminism addresses a variety of issues that are still occurring or unresolved today, including abortion rights, wage discrimination, differences between macho leftist men and racists, domestic chores, lesbianism, women\'s image as sexual objects, women\'s sexual desire and freedom, women\'s history and literature in college curricula, sexual harassment, sexual violence, and rape. This chronicle of American feminism gives the audience the pleasure to witness the past and the present of the most influential feminists of the day—Kate Millett, Rita Mae Brown, Shulamith Firestone, Susan Brownmiller. Moreover, overlapping archival footages with the interviews of the feminists shown in the footages, She\'s Beautiful When She\'s Angry presents powerful images, breaking away from the documentary-style films where sound is more dominant. Women, are you ready to get angry at the world? Don\'t miss this opportunity for you to become beautiful. [Sunah KIM]
