Growth/Independence Queer

Ji-ah and Na-young go to the sea to meet old friend Dong-hae. Ji-ah does not enter the water because of Allergy to seawater, but friends don’t believe it. After the sun sets, they start talking about past love.

Ji-ah and Na-young go on a trip to the ocean to meet their old friend Dong-hae. As the sun sets, the three friends share their stories of love. Dong-hae furtively reveals his unrequited love for Ji-ah, whereas Ji-ah is confused and unsettled by the fact that contrary to her peers, she has no interest in boys at all. Na-young tells Ji-ah that Ji-ah is feeling this way only because she hasn’t met a good enough guy for her to realize what true love is. Ji-ah’s confession that she likes being with her girl-friends more than boys is treated lightly as no big deal and something that will be easily resolved once she meets the right guy. The film, while cute and refreshingly charming, goes right to the heart of the matter. Just like how they take Ji-ah’s allergy to seawater as a mere exaggeration and end up hurting her feelings, these friends look back on their hetero-normative society, which views teenagers’ sexual identity crisis and issues as a trifling matter and a growing up phase that is only temporary and short-lived.
