SYNOPSIS

I Don\'t Belong Anywhere: The Cinema of Chantal Akerman touches upon some of 40 films by this prolific filmmaker, Chantal AKERMAN. From Brussels to Tel Aviv, from Paris to New York, the documentary takes us to all of the places she visited on her travels. An experimental filmmaker and a nomad, she shares with us her cinematographic journey, which continually questions the meaning of her existence at the risk of not winning the audience over or of confronting it. With her editor, Claire ATHERTON, she explains the origins of her language and of its esthetical biases.

PROGRAM NOTE

I Don\'t Belong Anywhere - The Cinema of Chantal
 Akerman
follows the footsteps of AKERMAN who
wanders from Brussels, Tel-Aviv to Paris and
New York, exploring her cinematic trajectory.
This documentary touches upon some of 40 films
by AKERMAN such as Jeanne Dielman, News
from Home, The Meetings of Anna, South, From
the East, Down There, and No Home Movie , and
gives the audience a valuable opportunity to
examine the behind-the-scenes and the filmmaking
process as well as the artistic inspirations coming
from these films. The interview with AKERMAN,
the conversations between AKERMAN and her
collaborator and editor Claire ATHERTON who
discuss the power of precise composition, timing,
and sequencing as they edit No Home Movie, the
interview with Aurore CLÉMENT who talks about the
negative audience response after the premiere of
The Meetings of Anna, and the interview with director
Gus VAN SANT who testifies the great influence
AKERMAN had on him as a filmmaker. All of these
interviews and conversations act as fascinating
stepping stones into AKERMAN\'s cinematic world.
However, AKERMAN suddenly passes away in
October 2015 with No Home Movie as her final work,
and this documentary becomes an unintended last
ode to AKERMAN. Marianne LAMBERT approaches
AKERMAN with friendliness and intimacy while also
maintaining her respect and humility, and AKERMAN
expresses a huge sense of loss after the death of her
mother, which was the main theme of her last film.
AKERMAN has disappeared into her own time but
we will never forget the beautiful cinematic works she
has created as well as her hands that were always
holding a cigarette, her husky voice and her unique
 smile. [CHO HyeYoung]
