GTFO: Get the F&#% Out

SYNOPSIS

Sparked by a public display of sexual harassment in 2012, GTFO: Get the F&#% Out pries open the video game world to explore a 20 billion dollar industry that is riddled with discrimination and misogyny. In recent years, the gaming community has grown more diverse than ever. This has led to a massive clash of values and women receive the brunt of the consequences every day, with acts of harassment. Through interviews with video game developers, journalists, and academics, GTFO: Get the F&#% Out paints a complex picture of the video game industry, while revealing the systemic and human motivations behind acts of harassment.
 

Videogame emerged as one of the hottest zones of feminism-related controversies in 2016. It was due to the notice of cancellation of a contract for a voice actor who performed the character of Tina in the videogame closers. This case was commented as a case which proved that videogame is still men¡¯s amusement. Male consumerism movement assembled under the flag of ¡®Anti-Women Association,¡¯ and videogame was pegged as almost the only area on which they could exert certain influences.

 However, is it true that videogame is a male-only amusement? What is interesting happened right after that. Female gamers disclosed male-centric gamer culture, and ¡®National D.Va Association¡¯(N.D.A afterwards) was organized. Inspired by D.Va(a female character for the videogame overwatch) N.D.A. declared themselves as a feminist group, and set up an agenda of breaking down sexism within the videogame. As Jeff KAPLAN, the visual director of Overwatch approved N.D.A. in his presentation during D.I.C.E. (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain) Summit 2017, some of male users who stigmatized N.D.A. as an extremist feminist group went through a sort of panic attack.

 GTFO: Get the F&#% Out is a documentary which explores the relationships between videogame and women, and reveals that the male violence conducted in the field of videogame is not a problem restricted in Korea. The issues of female characters in videogame, female positions within the videogame industry, and practices of female gamers are actively portrayed in this film. Thus, the reality which pushes women to become warriors is revealed in and out of videogame. It looks like that there would be a lot for ¡®us¡¯ to talk after the film. (Jay SOHN)
