SYNOPSIS

The ¡®Women¡¯s March,¡¯ a special event at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival gathering 82 female film figures, including Cate BLANCHETT, the jury president Agnès VARDA, Christine STEWART, among others, made a big headline. The number 82 stands for the number of female filmmakers who have walked down the red carpet of the festival ever since the very first Cannes Film Festival in 1946; meanwhile, 1645 male filmmakers have invited in competition at Cannes Film Festival so far. In addition, 71 male filmmakers were awarded the Palme d¡¯or while only two female filmmakers were awarded the same: Agnès VARDA (received the honorary Palme d¡¯or in 2015) who partook in the special event this year, and Jane CAMPION (shared her Palme d¡¯or with CHEN Kaige in 1993), the jury president in 2014.

Contemporary Women Filmmakers: The State of Things opens with the 2014 Cannes Jury press conference when Jane CAMPION is the jury president. Jane CAMPION expresses her deep regret over the fact that only 7% of films produced in the world film industry are directed by female filmmakers. Accompanying her are the female juror including Leila HATAMI, Sofia COPPOLA, JEON Do-yeon, and Carole BOUQUET, as well as the male jurors including Gael GARCIA BERNAL, Nicolas WINDING REFN, Willem DAFOE, and JIA Zhangke.

Canada¡¯s Quebec-based directors Rosanna MAULE and Guylaine DIONNE listen to the reality of the very slanted status of the industry and various strategies to fight against the unequal status quo while they review the issues and glorious moments within the history of women¡¯s films with the help of female filmmakers from many countries including Rakhshan BANI-ETEMAD, Margarethe VON TROTTA, Mira NAIR, Silvia CHANG, Ulrike OTTINGER, Isabel COIXET, Catherine BREILLAT, and male allies, such as Paulo BRANCO, a long-time producer for Chantal AKERMAN.
