SYNOPSIS

It is not always either thrilling or painful to experience something for the first time. It may be an adult fantasy to remember adolescence as only a rosy time or as pure pain. Looking at first experiences from the perspective of teen girls, the filmmaker liberates female adolescence from adult voyeurism and adds a dose of reality to the idea of first experiences. 15-year-old girl Marie, who lives in a Paris suburb, experiences her first love with Floriane, the captain of the girls¡¯ synchronized swimming team. Free from any restraint, Floriane is not afraid of various relationships but still wonders if she should have a sex with François, a male student on the swim team on whom Marie¡¯s friend Anne has a huge crush. When it is revealed that Floriane is still a virgin, contradicting a widespread rumor, a twist comes to this spider web of a love triangle. Excluding any parental intervention of forcing teenagers to follow norms and the stale perspective of ¡®coming-of-age¡¯ as a procedure of learning social laws through their conflicts with social orders, the film focuses on teen girls following their own desires and drives by bold confrontation of stereotyped images of homosexuality, female beauty, and the first experience. This feature debut of French filmmaker Céline SCIAMMA was highly acclaimed at Cannes in 2007. [Jay SOHN]
