SYNOPSIS

The collapse of the Seongsu Bridge in 1994 was an unforgettable event for those who lived during that time. When it happened, many were shocked to hear that some of the victims were students taking the bus to school. House of Hummingbird centers around Eunhee, a middle school student in 1994. The feeling of ¡®collapse¡¯ already exists everywhere in Eunhee's life. The family runs a rice cake shop in Daechi-dong and provides the best service to customers, but at home Eunhee¡¯s father reigns over the entire family while her mother gave up university so that her brother could attend. Eunhee's brother is violent and has the attitude of being the patriarchal heir of the household, and her older sister does her best to avoid their father¡¯s attention. Eunhee¡¯s school life features an oppressive homeroom teacher who brainwashes students to care only about academic achievement. To these constraints, Eunhee sometimes conforms, sometimes resists, as she strives to build her own life and identity. At Eunhee's Chinese language academy, the teacher, Young-ji, leaves a special impression on the teenager. Young-ji always expresses to Eunhee that she is doing well, and communicates in the simplest and most meaningful way she can do whatever she puts her mind to. While at first glance Eunhee seems a common schoolgirl who could be substituted for any other student, she is special and unique in her own right. There are moments when Eunhee's strangeness is suddenly apparent, and in these moments different viewers will react based on how much they can identify with her situation. As the characters endure oppression and pass through this period in their lives together, a warm yet painful spirit is implicitly communicated between them as they grow side by side. [KIM Sohui]
