SYNOPSIS

One of the most common features of the horror genre in South Korea is a single female character who lives alone. These women are often targeted sexually, and as technology has advanced fears involving digital sex crimes, safety and security have intensified. The Rented Room employs the horror and thriller genre framework to highlight this awful reailty, giving solidarity and consolation to the women who live in fear. [HWANG Miyojo]

Born in 1995, HWANG Jieun graduated from the Department of Visual Design at Pyeongtaek University, and filmed The Rental while preparing to graduate. She is especially interested in women's studies and takes keen interest in the hierarchical relationship between women and men. After working in advertising, where references to products are more important than creativity, she is pushing hard to assert herself as a filmmaker.
