Asian Short Film & Video Competition

One of the most well-known competition sections that represents the SIWFF, ‘Asian Short Film & Video Competition’ has attained attention as a novel and original program and showcase of the power of Asian women’s films. This year, the competition received a total of 429 film submissions from about 30 countries including Korea, Malaysia, India, Taiwan, Vietnam, China, Iran, Philippines, Hong Kong, etc. This year’s submissions deal with topics such as women’s everyday experience of aggression, the marriage institution and childbirth, bodily autonomy, LGBTQ human rights, poverty and employment instability of the youth, refugee and immigration issues in a globalized era, and in doing so resonate the fact that all issues are collectively shared by the female directors, not just among a few individuals. This trend can be attributed to the recent movement of feminist ideals and consciousness that are spreading around the young generation, not just in Korea, but worldwide. Films that embodied this feminist awareness through new storytelling, cinematography, and filmic creativity, or showcased a refreshing, innovative interpretation of action or comedy genres, which are so rare in movies featuring female protagonists, were selected for the final round. The 17 films that qualified to the final round will be competing for the Grand Prize and the First Prize during the festival.
