SYNOPSIS

Chytilová first feature-length film Something Different parallels two different kinds of women, who lead two different lives. Eva, a gymnast (played by Eva Bosáková a real-life gymnast in a national team) sacrifices her interests and personal life for her career as an athlete, but is unable to free herself from skepticism. She finally wins at the Olympics, but only to find herself still waiting for the day of compensation. Vera, a housewife who devotes herself to her husband and child, is unable to find satisfaction from her domestic life. She tries to find renewed life by having an affair, but it doesn¡¯t satiate her. The film follows the course of where their dreams for ¡®something different from the present¡¯ can¡¯t go any further and as a result, they must return to the their normal lives. Eva goes back to the gym, and Vera stays with her family.
Something Different makes its feminist statement by illustrating the fact that these women¡¯s constraints and restrictions are not very different although each woman lives in a different reality under different conditions. Through emphasizing their seemingly different lives, they can choose to be ¡®something different¡¯ depending on the principles of life that they decide on: domination or subordination, exploration or conformation. (Joo You-shin)
