This is a section for new queer films worldwide. In Queer Rainbow, we rethink social customs, tolerance, and human rights from a feminist-queer perspective and introduce emerging trends in gender minority issues and queer film aesthetics.
Seven from among numerous queer films that include fictions, documentaries, and everything in-between have been selected this year. It has been noted that documentaries simply and thoughtfully address many facets of individuals we thought we knew. The following are films that I really wanted to share with SIWFF audiences this year: Loving Highsmith, a compilation of the personal moments and records of Patricia Highsmith, author of the original Carol, and Esther Newton Made Me Gay, which scrutinizes queer history by looking closer at lesbian icon Esther Newton.
The documentary How the Room Felt intimately captures the women’s soccer team in Georgia, where the persecution of LGBTQ is severe. A lesbian version of Romeo and Juliet becomes the film Besties. The comedy Anais in Love follows a 30-year-old woman struggling in every aspect of her career and love life. Zero Chou’s Wrath of Desire allows us to experience a pleasant downfall wherein all boundaries and taboos distill into nihilation.
Watching these films, we can reconfirm how extensive, honest, and delicate the lives, emotions, and aspirations of women are. Queer My Friends is a documentary that seems like a serious answer after careful deliberation about questions of this nature, including how individuals with different identities can create friendships and join in solidarity and then find ways to coexist.
