Synopsis
Animal Liberation Wave activists discover 15 cows near an illegal dog farm and vow to rescue them. Nicknamed "Flower Cows," six are temporarily sheltered at a ranch in Inje County with help from donors, farmers, and local activists. To find them a permanent home, the activists collaborate with elderly residents of Sinwol Village, eventually transforming a closed school into Korea¡¯s first cow sanctuary.
Director's Statement
I spent two years filming the process of Korea¡¯s first attempt to establish a cattle sanctuary, led by the animal rights group Animal Liberation Wave. By documenting activists rescuing cows once regarded as mere meat and struggling to heal the injured, the film aims to sound an alarm in a society where killing has become routine. It also follows the interactions between elderly residents of Sinwol-ri—a village on the brink of disappearing—and young activists as they work together to build the sanctuary. Through this, the film sheds light on Korea¡¯s pressing issues of low birth rates and an aging population, while illustrating a virtuous cycle in which caring for animals leads to revitalizing local communities.
