SYNOPSIS

The first abstract artist was a woman — Hilma af Klint. Misjudged and ignored for more than a century, she is now shaking the art world with her mind-expanding oeuvre.

PROGRAM NOTE

Beyond the Visible – Hilma af Klint is a biographical documentary about Hilma af Klint, a Swedish female artist who examined abstraction before Kandinsky, who is known as the first abstract painter from Western art history. The film begins with how the current audiences admire Hilma and moves on to her birth, her art school years, and her introduction to theosophy. Then, the audience encounters Hilma, after hearing a voice telling her, ¡°You are to proclaim a new philosophy of life.¡± in 1905, undertakes the task of capturing the essential awe beyond the visible world and proliferatively produces artwork, such as Primordial Chaos series (1906) and  The Ten Largest series (1907). She went through a silent phase after a harsh critique by theosophist Rudolf Steiner, but later moved to a small studio in a tiny countryside and painted more than a thousand pieces. Afraid of the discordance of her works against the art trend, Hilma set the reveal date of her paintings 20 years after her death. However, it was only in the 1980¡¯s her works regained attention, overcoming the indifference and misunderstandings toward female artists. Around fifty years have passed since Linda Nochlin asked ¡°Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?¡± through her insightful article. The film succeeds in that effort to answer that question. Two friends appear later in the movie, who support the artist emotionally and financially, emphasizing the importance of solidarity to the audience. The film shows abundant plates of her artwork and is full of visual pleasure through reenacting the creative process, and the narration delivering Hilda¡¯s spiritual thought adds charm to the film.
