SYNOPSIS

Synopsis

While three graceful and elegant women are having some coffee, there is a tension among them. Their three daughters look pretty intense too. Seunghee's mom drives her daughter into the corner, and Seunghee imagines making a radical decision. Who is going to be the final winner?

Program Note

In the first half, Them shows conversations among mothers who have daughters learning modern dance, expressed via bold cross-cutting scenes with closeups and medium shots. When it seems to satirize helicopter parents who are very keen on their children entering college, the film leads viewers to even deeper emotional tension. Although the character and actions of the mother are dramatically exaggerated, it visually emphasises the daughter's mental conflict so that the exaggeration doesn't seem to be a fault. Also, the non-sensational ending is impressive. [HWANG Miyojo]
