SYNOPSIS

Echo with Women's Voices Their Involvement in Political Movements examines the women's movement and women's political  participation in Taiwan over the past thirty years.

PROGRAM NOTE

The film begins with a letter from Li Yuan-chen, a junior feminist and politician, when Annette Lu, a prominent feminist and politician who served as vice-president for two years, is imprisoned. When Annette Lu returned from studying abroad, she was shocked to see that Taiwanese women's college entrance rate was being criticized by the media and society. She wrote a newspaper column stating that ¡°a male-dominated society must end¡± and advocates ¡°New Feminism.¡± This is the beginning of the modern Taiwanese women's movement. And many women, including Li Yuan-chen, were inspired by Annette L and started the women's movement. In Annette Lu¡¯s statement and the history of the movement, the women's movement 'naturally' moves on the path of the democratization movement. The trajectories of women including Annette Lu, are located within the democratization movement and movement of party politics. The status of the Taiwanese women's movement in the relationship between the political movement and the women's movement is very unique compared to other 1970s-80s films screened together in this year¡¯s Polemics section. On the one hand, the independence and identity of the women's movement may be criticized, but on the other hand, it is difficult to find an example where women politicians from the women's movement occupy such a key position in the central parliament/party politics. Plenty of news articles, photographs, and music materials about important events in Taiwan's modern history also make this documentary more interesting. [HWANG Miyojo]
