SYNOPSIS

In 2009, women in Gwangju gathered with their camcorders. Despite the film festival being unfamiliar in the region, they went all around the city to make it a ¡°women¡± film festival. This small festival now represents Gwangju and women's films. Like the slogan of the 10th Women¡¯s Film Festival in Gwangju: ¡°Let¡¯s Go and Dance.¡±

PROGRAM NOTE

Gwangju Women¡¯s Film Festival commenced its first edition in 2010 and is set to mark its 13th anniversary in 2022. The festival produced a documentary called the 10th Anniversary Documentary to mark its 10th anniversary in 2019. Although the film begins by stating that the directors made the film to share more films by TEUM, a women creators¡¯ society with more people, the audience will notice that this is based on their love for the film and their aspiration for a movement to organize power, wishing to do something with people together. Most notable is the identity of the Gwangju Women¡¯s Film Festival as a local film festival. Just as various Gwangju civic groups, including the Gwangju Women¡¯s Center, established the Gwangju Women¡¯s Film Festival Promotion Committee when they began the first film festival, the festival is still created with dozens of local social organizations under the participatory organization system. In addition, it is impressive that the screening criteria indicate that the film should be suitable and timely for the Gwangju audience to watch. The reason that the festival has managed to become the center of film culture in Gwangju over the past 13 years may be because of its constant exploration and awareness regarding a local women¡¯s cinematic and cultural movement.
