SYNOPSIS

This film exposes the oppressive working conditions of hundreds of maidservants in Pune and reveals how women came together to form an organization and fight for their rights.

PROGRAM NOTE

Maid servant Subhadra in Pune suffers through long hours of labor for low wages. She asks for a pay increase from her employer. Instead, she is replaced. And so, Subhadra encourages ¡°maid servants¡± to go out on strike. Maid Servant functions as a speaker for the Indian women labor class by insisting on the need to strike and fight for labor rights by letting 30 maid servants tell their own stories in one room. [Sunner Si, HAEPARI]

  • YugantarYugantar

Yugantar, India¡¯s first feminist film collective, was founded by Deepa Dhanraj, Abha Bhaiya, Navroze Contractor, and Meera Rao. From 1981 to 1983, Yugantar developed projects in partnership with existing or developing women¡¯s groups around the country. Rich synergies between their activist and creative practices mark Yugantar¡¯s films as a potent chapter of feminist filmmaking, inspiring reflections on political friendship and other modes of contemporary coexistence.
